Migrate to Single D2L Instance

In September 2021, the Colorado Online Steering Committee made the decision for all CCCS colleges to migrate to a single D2L instance.  The decision was made based on an assessment that compared our current environment (14 D2L instances, one per college and for CCCOnline) versus using a single D2L instance. After assessing the benefits and challenges, the Online Steering Committee made the decision to migrate to a single D2L instance for all course modalities (i.e. online, hybrid, in-classroom, etc.).  A major driver was due to it provides a better student experience.

How is it a better experience for the student? A survey conducted in Spring 2021 showed that a majority of students wanted to log in to the D2L Learning Management System (LMS) and have all their courses listed rather than accessing separate LMS’ for each course. Using a single D2L instance will also benefit the instructors who teach across CCCS institutions. All their courses will be listed within the single D2L LMS.

What’s Next?

There is a group working on migrating courses to the single D2L instance.  The group, a project team, is comprised of the LMS administrators at your college and some CCCOnline Academic Technology members.  The goal is for all courses to be available in the single D2L instance by Fall 2022. Below are the major milestones for the project:

  • October 2021: Project implementation begins with each of the college's LMS admins.
  • November 2021:  Communicate with faculty and instructors about the migration to a single D2L instance.
  • November 2021:  Colleges start determining the course shells to migrate to the single D2L instance.
  • December 2021:  Courses shells start migrating to the single D2L instance.
  • April 2022:  Faculty and instructors start preparing their Fall 2022 courses to teach.
  • April 2022:  Students notified of what expect in Fall 2022.
  • Fall 2022:  Go-live with a single D2L instance for all course modalities.

Training and communication will be provided to faculty and instructors to ensure they know what to expect and how to use the new D2L environment.  The project team will ensure courses are migrated and functional for Fall 2022. They will need assistance from college faculty, instructors, and staff on determining which D2L course shells to migrate.
